Notes to aluminum PCB design

What is aluminum PCB

Aluminum PCB is a type of circuit board with PCB base material as aluminum substrate, which consists of a dielectric metal base with a bonded copper circuit layer to create superior heat transfer to help cool components while eliminating.

The application of aluminum PCB

Aluminum Backed PCBs are popular in applications in high power/high thermal heat dissipation applications. Originally tasked for use in high power switching supply applications, such as consume LED lights, LED traffic lights, general lighting and automotive lighting.

Notes to aluminum PCB design

By using an aluminum backed design can allow PCB designers to decrease the safety margin used with power LEDs and derate said LEDs less than would be the case with a conventional PCB design. As with all components, the lower the operating temperature of the LEDs in a design the longer those LEDs can be expected to operate before failing. However, the PCB design and PCB layout for LED boards could be much more different than traditional rigid PCB board.

  • the track width/spacing : must be more than 0.5mm/0.5mm, or else, it will cause a circuit track open in the manufacturing process, which is much different from rigid PCB track design.
  • the hole size must be more than 1.60mm, it will add extra manufacturing cost if your hole size is smaller size as the rule of rigid PCB design rule.
